Runner’s Knee Physiotherapy
Runner’s knee commonly presents as discomfort at the front of the knee, and is often more noticeable during running, stair use, squatting, or when standing up after prolonged sitting. In some cases, it is related to lower limb loading, movement control, and changes in training volume, and daily activities may also be affected.
If the discomfort is not mainly at the front of the knee, or is more general around the knee, you may also refer to [Knee Pain Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Pain or discomfort at the front of the knee
- Symptoms that are more noticeable during running
- Discomfort on stairs or when squatting
- Front-of-knee discomfort after getting up from prolonged sitting
- In some cases, the front of the knee feels more tired or sore after exercise
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy usually looks at which activities most clearly bring on the symptoms, especially running, stairs, squatting, and getting up after sitting for a while. Assessment may also include lower limb loading, movement control, and how the hip, knee, and ankle work together, to help identify factors that may be contributing to front-of-knee pain.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may include activity modification, strengthening and control exercises, running-related advice, and graded rehabilitation according to symptom response, lower limb control, and everyday activity needs. The aim is to improve front-of-knee discomfort and gradually restore activity tolerance.
