Myofascial Release
Myofascial release is one of the treatment approaches that may be used in physiotherapy in selected cases. It is more commonly considered when muscle tightness is more obvious, pulling discomfort is more noticeable, or movement range is affected in certain activities. The focus is to first address the tightness response in the relevant muscles and soft tissues so that movement may feel easier and less restricted.
When may myofascial release be considered?
- Muscle tightness is more obvious
- Certain movements bring on pulling discomfort
- Movement range feels restricted in some activities
- Some areas are more sensitive with pressure
- Tightness is already affecting posture, daily activity, or activity tolerance
What is usually assessed first?
Assessment usually looks at where the symptoms are, which movements provoke them most clearly, and whether the tightness response in the relevant muscles or soft tissues is more obvious. Where appropriate, movement range, symptom response during pressure or activity, and the effect on day-to-day function may also be assessed to help decide whether myofascial release is suitable.
How is myofascial release usually used?
When it is considered appropriate after assessment, myofascial release is used according to the symptom presentation and the affected area, especially where tightness is more obvious, pulling discomfort is more noticeable, or movement range is limited in certain activities. The physiotherapist may then add activity advice, manual therapy, or exercise therapy where needed, so that improvement can gradually carry over into daily activity.
