Achilles Tendinopathy Physiotherapy

Achilles tendinopathy commonly causes discomfort around the Achilles tendon. In some cases, the tendon feels stiffer in the morning, and symptoms become more noticeable after running, jumping, or increased loading. Beyond sport, discomfort may also be felt during walking, stair use, or rising onto the toes.

If your symptoms are mainly under the heel or along the inner sole, especially with the first steps in the morning, you may also refer to [Plantar Fasciitis Physiotherapy].

Common symptoms

How physiotherapy assesses

Physiotherapy usually begins by looking at whether the symptoms are mainly around the Achilles tendon, whether morning stiffness is a prominent feature, and how the symptoms respond to running, jumping, or other loading. Where appropriate, ankle movement, calf strength, gait, and lower limb loading may also be reviewed to determine whether the presentation is more consistent with Achilles tendinopathy.

How physiotherapy may help

Physiotherapy may include activity modification, appropriate calf and ankle-related exercises, load management advice, and graded rehabilitation according to symptom response, loading demands, and daily needs. The aim is to improve Achilles discomfort and activity tolerance progressively.

Related Conditions

Plantar Fasciitis

This may also be relevant if the pain is more under the heel or sole.

Ankle Sprain

Changes in ankle movement and loading can sometimes affect the Achilles region.

Runner’s Knee

Running-related loading issues can sometimes affect both the knee and the Achilles tendon.
