Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the treatment approaches that may be used in physiotherapy in selected cases. It is more commonly considered when pain is more localised, muscle tightness is more obvious, or certain movements bring on symptoms more clearly. Whether it is suitable still depends on assessment of symptom location, presentation, and activity needs.
When may acupuncture be considered?
- Pain is felt more clearly in one area
- Muscle tightness or tension is more prominent
- Certain movements, positions, or daily activities bring on symptoms more easily
- The affected area is more sensitive with pressure
- Symptoms are affecting work, daily activity, or activity tolerance
What is usually assessed first?
Assessment usually looks at where the symptoms are, whether the pain is more localised, which movements provoke it most clearly, and how the area responds to pressure, movement, or loading. Where appropriate, movement performance, muscle tightness, and day-to-day function may also be assessed to help decide whether acupuncture is suitable.
How is acupuncture usually used?
When it is considered appropriate after assessment, acupuncture is used according to the symptom presentation and the affected area, especially where pain is more focused, muscle tightness is more obvious, or activity more easily provokes symptoms. The physiotherapist may then add activity advice, manual therapy, or exercise therapy where needed, so that improvement can gradually carry over into daily activity.
