Ankle Sprain Physiotherapy
An ankle sprain commonly presents with pain, swelling, instability, or discomfort when walking after twisting the ankle. In some cases, symptoms are more noticeable during everyday walking, going downstairs, or landing again, and some people continue to feel unstable or have recurrent ankle sprains over time.
If your symptoms are mainly around the sole or heel and are not clearly related to swelling or instability after a twist, you may also refer to [Plantar Fasciitis Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Pain and swelling after twisting the ankle
- A feeling of instability or discomfort when walking
- More noticeable during stairs or landing
- The ankle feels easier to twist again
- In some cases, instability remains even after swelling settles
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy usually begins by looking at how the ankle was twisted, where the pain and swelling are, how it responds during walking, and which activities are most affected. Where appropriate, ankle movement, weight-bearing, balance, and landing control may also be reviewed to determine whether instability, movement restriction, or the risk of recurrent sprain is still present.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may include activity modification, ankle mobility work, balance and control exercises, and graded rehabilitation according to the level of pain, instability, and activity demands after the sprain. The aim is to improve ankle symptoms and restore everyday activity progressively.
