Calf Strain Physiotherapy
A calf strain commonly occurs during acceleration, sudden stopping, jumping or forceful movement. Pain may begin suddenly at the back of the calf, sometimes with a feeling of being struck or pulled. Local tightness, tenderness, swelling or weakness may follow and can affect walking, running and stair use.
If pain is mainly focused around the Achilles tendon just above the heel, particularly during running, jumping or first thing in the morning, you may also refer to [Achilles Tendinopathy Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Sudden calf pain during running, acceleration, jumping or forceful movement
- Local tightness, tenderness or weakness at the back of the calf
- Discomfort during walking, stair use or heel raises
- Symptoms becoming more noticeable when returning to running or acceleration
- More significant strains may be associated with swelling or bruising
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy usually begins by looking at how the injury occurred, such as during acceleration, sudden stopping, jumping or forceful movement, and how walking, stair use and sport have been affected afterwards. Where appropriate, the location of pain, calf strength, ankle movement, heel-raise ability, single-leg loading and running-related movement may also be assessed to understand current function, loading tolerance and rehabilitation needs.
If calf pain develops without a clear injury and is associated with marked swelling, warmth, redness or other unusual symptoms, medical assessment should be sought first.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may include activity modification, calf and lower-limb strengthening, and graded rehabilitation according to the extent of the injury, symptom response and activity needs. Rehabilitation can then progress towards walking, heel raises, running, acceleration and jumping according to strength, functional performance and individual return-to-activity goals.
If the injury occurred during running, ball sports or other sporting activity, you may also refer to [Sports Injury Physiotherapy].
