Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Physiotherapy
Carpal tunnel syndrome commonly presents with finger numbness, tingling, or waking at night because of hand discomfort. In some cases, people also notice reduced hand function, weaker grip, or symptoms that come on more easily during repeated hand use.
If the discomfort is mainly around the wrist and is not clearly associated with finger numbness or night-time symptoms, you may also refer to [Wrist Pain Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Numbness or tingling in the fingers
- More noticeable at night, sometimes waking you from sleep
- Reduced grip or hand function
- Symptoms becoming more obvious after prolonged hand use
- In some cases, shaking the hand gives temporary relief
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy usually begins by looking at where the numbness or tingling is felt, when it is most noticeable, and how it responds at night, after repeated hand use, or after work tasks. Where appropriate, wrist and hand function may also be reviewed to help determine whether the presentation is more consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve-related patterns.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may include activity modification, appropriate wrist and hand-related exercises, advice on day-to-day use, and graded rehabilitation according to symptom pattern, timing, and daily demands. The aim is to reduce symptoms and improve hand function progressively.
