Custom Insoles
Custom insoles are insoles prescribed according to foot assessment findings. Their main role is to support the foot, redistribute pressure, and help with some symptoms related to standing, walking, running, or foot loading. The physiotherapist considers foot structure, gait, loading pattern, and activity needs before deciding whether custom insoles are appropriate.
When may custom insoles be considered?
- Symptoms come on more easily around the sole, heel, or forefoot during standing, walking, or running
- Certain parts of the foot take more pressure and become uncomfortable more easily
- Gait or foot loading may be contributing to symptoms
- Some lower limb symptoms are more noticeable during walking, running, or prolonged standing and foot support may be relevant
- After assessment, the physiotherapist considers insoles to be one suitable part of management
What is usually assessed first?
Assessment usually looks at where the symptoms are, which activities bring them on most clearly, and whether standing, walking, running, or footwear is part of the pattern. Where appropriate, the physiotherapist also reviews foot structure, gait, ankle-foot movement, and loading pattern to decide whether custom insoles are suitable.
How are custom insoles usually used?
When they are considered appropriate after assessment, the insole plan is based on foot loading and gait findings, with more emphasis on supporting the relevant area, redistributing pressure, and reducing symptoms that come on with walking, running, or prolonged standing. Footwear advice, activity adjustment, or exercise therapy may also be added where needed so that improvement can carry over into daily activity.
