Frozen Shoulder Physiotherapy

Frozen shoulder usually causes the shoulder to become gradually more painful and stiff. Common difficulties include raising the arm, dressing, combing the hair, or reaching the hand behind the back. In some cases, night pain is more noticeable and sleep or daily activities may also be affected.

If your shoulder symptoms are more noticeable during lifting or reaching, and stiffness is not the main problem, you may also refer to [Rotator Cuff-related Shoulder Pain Physiotherapy].

Common symptoms

How physiotherapy assesses

Physiotherapy assessment usually includes the history of symptoms, pain pattern, functional limitations, and changes in both active and passive shoulder movement. The neck and other shoulder structures may also be considered where relevant to help distinguish frozen shoulder from other causes of shoulder pain.

How physiotherapy may help

Physiotherapy may include appropriate shoulder mobility exercises, stretching, hands-on treatment, and advice on daily activities according to the level of pain and stiffness. The aim is to gradually improve range of movement, reduce discomfort, and help restore shoulder use.

Related Conditions

Rotator Cuff-Related Shoulder Pain

Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain also commonly affects lifting, reaching, and shoulder loading, and some symptoms can overlap with frozen shoulder.

Neck Pain

Neck-related problems can sometimes refer symptoms into the shoulder and upper arm, so both areas may need to be considered during assessment.

Tennis Elbow

Changes in upper-limb loading and movement pattern may influence symptoms across the shoulder, elbow, and forearm.
