Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is one of the treatment approaches that may be used in physiotherapy in selected cases. It is more commonly considered when muscle tightness is more obvious, pulling discomfort is more noticeable, or movement range is affected in certain activities. The focus is to first address the tightness response in the relevant muscles and soft tissues so that movement may feel easier and less restricted.

When may myofascial release be considered?

What is usually assessed first?

Assessment usually looks at where the symptoms are, which movements provoke them most clearly, and whether the tightness response in the relevant muscles or soft tissues is more obvious. Where appropriate, movement range, symptom response during pressure or activity, and the effect on day-to-day function may also be assessed to help decide whether myofascial release is suitable.

How is myofascial release usually used?

When it is considered appropriate after assessment, myofascial release is used according to the symptom presentation and the affected area, especially where tightness is more obvious, pulling discomfort is more noticeable, or movement range is limited in certain activities. The physiotherapist may then add activity advice, manual therapy, or exercise therapy where needed, so that improvement can gradually carry over into daily activity.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is more commonly used for movement-related discomfort, joint stiffness, or tissue tightness. In some cases, it may also be combined with myofascial release.

Neck Pain

Neck pain may affect turning, work posture, and shoulder-neck tolerance. In some cases where tightness is more prominent, myofascial release may also be considered.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain may affect lifting, reaching, dressing, and day-to-day upper limb use. In some shoulder presentations with more obvious tightness or pulling discomfort, myofascial release may also be considered.

Not sure how your current condition should be managed?
