Plantar Fasciitis Physiotherapy
Plantar fasciitis commonly causes discomfort around the heel or inner side of the sole, and is often most noticeable with the first steps in the morning or when standing up after sitting for a period of time. In some cases, symptoms also worsen after prolonged standing, increased walking, or after being on the feet for a while, and may affect day-to-day walking and standing tolerance.
If your symptoms are mainly around the Achilles tendon and are associated with morning stiffness or increased discomfort after running and jumping, you may also refer to [Achilles Tendinopathy Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Pain with the first steps in the morning
- Discomfort around the heel or inner sole
- Symptoms that are more easily aggravated after prolonged standing
- Increased plantar discomfort after walking for a period of time
- In some cases, tenderness around the inner heel
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy usually begins by looking at whether the symptoms are mainly around the heel or inner sole, when they are most noticeable, and how they respond to walking, prolonged standing, or daily activity. Where appropriate, ankle movement, calf flexibility, gait, and lower limb loading may also be reviewed to determine whether the presentation is more consistent with plantar fasciitis.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may include activity modification, appropriate ankle and calf-related exercises, advice on walking and standing, and graded rehabilitation according to symptom response and daily needs. The aim is to improve plantar discomfort and day-to-day tolerance progressively.
