Sciatica Physiotherapy
Sciatica usually refers to nerve-related symptoms travelling from the low back or buttock into the leg. Symptoms may include pain, tingling, numbness, or a pulling sensation, and may be aggravated by walking, prolonged sitting, bending, or certain positions.
If your symptoms are mainly in the low back without clear extension into the leg, you may also refer to [Low Back Pain Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Symptoms travelling from the low back or buttock into the thigh or leg
- Tingling, numbness, pulling, or nerve-like pain
- More discomfort with prolonged sitting, walking, bending, or coughing
- In some cases, reduced leg strength or tolerance
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy assessment usually includes the distribution of symptoms, any tingling or numbness, which activities are most affected, and the movement, function, and nerve-related presentation of the low back and leg. Assessment also helps consider whether symptoms are more likely related to the low back, nerve irritation, or another lower-limb source.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may help through movement advice, low back and nerve-related exercises, load management, and modification of daily activities. The aim is to reduce ongoing irritation and improve mobility, walking, and day-to-day function.
