Hip Pain Physiotherapy
Hip pain commonly presents as discomfort around the groin, front or side of the hip, or nearby buttock region. Symptoms may become more noticeable during walking, stair use, squatting, rising from a seated position, putting on shoes and socks, or exercise. In some cases, hip stiffness or reduced movement may also affect everyday activities.
If your symptoms are mainly around the outer side of the hip and are more noticeable during side-lying, walking or single-leg loading, you may also refer to [Lateral Hip Pain Physiotherapy].
Common symptoms
- Pain or discomfort around the groin, front or side of the hip, or nearby buttock region
- More noticeable during walking or stair use
- Discomfort when squatting, putting on shoes and socks, or rising from a seated position
- Hip stiffness after prolonged sitting
- More noticeable during running, exercise or single-leg loading
How physiotherapy assesses
Physiotherapy usually begins by looking at where the discomfort is felt, which activities provoke it most, and how the symptoms respond to walking, stair use, squatting, prolonged sitting, or exercise. Where appropriate, hip movement, hip and lower-limb strength, gait, weight-bearing, and movement control may also be reviewed to identify factors associated with the symptoms and activity limitations. Depending on the presentation, the low back, lateral hip, or other nearby areas may also be considered.
How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy may include activity modification, hip mobility work, strengthening and movement-control exercises, and graded rehabilitation according to symptoms, activity needs, and hip function. The aim is to improve hip symptoms and restore tolerance for everyday activities progressively.
